Thought for Today

“It is by riding a bicycle
that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are,
while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you,
and you have no such accurate remembrance of country
you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.”

~ Ernest Hemingway
(1899-1961)

As we deal with the rising cost of gasoline it is time to recognize the need for alternative forms of transportation. The bicycle has long been one of the best, if not the best. Many are seeking public transit as a means to ease their burdens at the gas pump. While this is a good alternative, no form of transportation can provide the freedom that a bicycle can. Feeling the wind in your face as you cruise down the road, and seeing many things for the first time because you are not whizzing by at sixty miles per hour, a bicycle can and will set your soul, heart, and mind free.

There are bicycles made today to fit nearly everyone, from the young to the old. Many cities and communities provide bike lanes and paths to make riding your bike safer. Bike riding is a great form of exercise and a great way to spend time outdoors, bicycling is also a great way to spend time with family.

Whether you ride a bike to commute to your daily job, to run a quick errand, to cruise up and down the streets of your neighborhood, or to embark on a cross country journey, you will be doing both yourself and the environment a great favor.
