Thought for the Day

“When we walk upon Mother Earth,
we always plant our feet carefully

because we know the faces of our future generations
are looking up at
us from beneath the ground.
we never forget them.”

– Chief Oren Lyons
(1930 – )

Oren R. Lyons is a Native American Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga and Seneca Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. Lyons is now a recognized advocate of indigenous rights. Lyons was raised in the culture and practices of the Iroquois on the Seneca and Onondaga reservations in Upstate New York. Lyons served in the United States Army. Upon leaving Syracuse, Lyons pursued a career in commercial art in New York City, becoming the art and planning director of Norcross Greeting Cards. In 1970, Lyons returned to Onondaga to be closer to his cultural heritage.
