Black Elk Speaks, Circle Power

Thought for the Day

You have noticed that everything an Indian does in a circle,
and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles,
and everything tries to be round.

In the old days all our power came to us from the sacred hoop
of the nation and so long as the hoop was unbroken the people
flourished. The flowering tree was the living center of the hoop,
and the circle of the four quarters nourished it. The east gave peace
and light, the south gave warmth, the west gave rain and the north
with its cold and mighty wind gave strength and endurance. This
knowledge came to us from the outer world with our religion.

Everything the power of the world does is done in a circle.
The sky is round and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball
and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls.
Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours.
The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon
does the same and both are round. Even the seasons form a great
circle in their changing and always come back again to where they were.

The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is
in everything where power moves. Our teepees were round like the
nests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nation’s hoop,
a nest of many nests, where the Great Spirit meant for us to hatch our children.

Joke of the Week

Quote of the Day
“Above all else:
go out with a sense of humor. It is needed armor.
Joy in one’s heart and some laughter on one’s lips
is a sign that the person down deep
has a pretty good grasp of life.”

~Hugh Sidey~

Thought of the Day
I was looking things over last night and realized that I, for some strange reason had not added humor to this site. That was not intentional, just an oversight and one that I aim to remedy starting today. Laughter is the best medicine, humor is the tonic for the soul, no matter how bad we feel, no matter how bad a day we may have, simple laughter will lift the burden on our hearts and make us feel that all is better.

What is Your Ambition

Quote of the Day
“When ambition ends, happiness begins.”
~Thomas Merton~

Thought of the Day
For some time I have wondered, should ambition be labeled a bad word? It is my belief that ambition teaches and encourages greed. I suppose it might depend on how you define ambition, for example; it has been my ambition to live a simple self-sustaining life, to live with less instead of more.

Some Call Me A Dreamer

Quote of the Day

“They who dream by day
are cognizant of many things
which escape those
who dream only by night.”

~Edgar Allan Poe

Thought of the Day
I have been called many things, a dreamer and a thinker are two things I do not mind being called. I have been told that I think too much, thus I dwell on things that do not really matter. While this may be true I refuse to correct what some consider a malady or a handicap. In my mind I can go where I want and create the world I want. Some call it thinking too much, I call it using my imagination.

Thought of the Day

“I believe that the great Creator
has put ores and oil on this earth
to give us a breathing spell.
As we exhaust them,
we must be prepared to fall back on our farms,
which is God’s true storehouse
and can never be exhausted.
We can learn to synthesize material
for every human need from things that grow.”

~ George Washington Carver
